Understanding the Weaponization of DEI
This week, we explore the increasing misuse of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to discredit and demean leaders of color. Recently, Vice President Kamala Harris was labeled as “the country’s first DEI vice president” by some conservatives, aiming to diminish her substantial credentials and accomplishments. This label implies she reached her position solely because of her race and gender.
Such narratives are part of a broader anti-DEI movement, which has wrongly blamed DEI initiatives for various societal issues, from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank to Boeing’s safety crisis. This scapegoating reflects a resistance to genuine efforts aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion within institutions.
When we hear colleagues weaponizing the term DEI in the workplace, we should speak up. Here are some examples of responses you can use to intervene:
“Using words like diversity hire or DEI hire is hurtful and harmful. I know I would be hurt if someone referred to me that way. Can we address her by her name please?”
“How would you feel if someone said you only got that job because you are a man?”
“Why would we assume that he is less qualified? Is there something in his background, experience, or credentials that leads you to believe that?”
Let's empower ourselves by challenging assumptions about qualifications and standing firm in the value of our experiences and credentials. Our achievements should be celebrated and respected, not diminished by harmful labels.
Empowerment Tip: Stand tall and proud of your accomplishments. Let's continue to support and uplift each other, transforming narratives and championing true equality.
