A Historical Week!
Leading Story
Kamala!
This has been an eventful seven days! Since I was in your inbox last, here in America, Biden announced he will not seek another term, and he endorsed the first ever Black, South Asian, and woman Vice President, Kamala Harris. I was part of the 44,000 Black women who were part of the call. Will she win? Only time will tell, but let’s take a moment to honor Shirley Chisholm, who paved the way for this historic moment.
Vice President Harris may be the first Woman of Color to receive the Democratic nomination, but she is not the first to try. Shirley Chisholm, known as "Fighting Shirley," was born and raised in Brooklyn, the daughter of immigrants from Barbados and Guyana, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC).
Chisholm began her career as a nursery schoolteacher before venturing into politics. She joined chapters of the League of Women Voters, the NAACP, the Urban League, and the Democratic Party club in Bedford-Stuyvesant. During her time in the House of Representatives, she championed racial and gender equality, advocated for poor Americans, and worked to end the Vietnam War. In 1971, she co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus.
As we witness this historic time, consider watching the excellent movie "Shirley" on Netflix to learn more about her incredible journey and enduring impact.

Say Her Name: Sonya Massey
When it comes to Black women, America continues to make history, both positively and negatively. This story may not be getting the attention it deserves. Is it due to the political season? Are we fatigued? The original media reports did not reflect what actually happened. It appears the police officer involved should not have been on duty, as he has multiple DUIs on his record, was discharged from the army for misconduct, and has worked at several police departments in a short time span. Below, Sonya’s father discusses how there was an initial cover-up and how he only learned more details after a relative stepped in.
