Mother Attacked After Not Tipping Stylist

Stylist cuts child’s hair after not receiving a tip

While researching for this newsletter, I came across this story from Indianapolis. The mother paid $135 for the hairstyle in the above picture, which took TEN hours to complete, although it usually takes three. The stylist expected a tip and because she did not receive it, she attempted to keep the mother and child from leaving. The full story along with videos of the incident are here, but it made me think.. what are the rules for tipping? Is it obligatory? When I began my hair loc journey, I asked around to learn what others do for tipping, because I was unsure.

According to the first source included below, hairdressers should be given 15%-20% of the total fee. A friend suggested one should not tip when the professional determines his or her own fees. For example, a nail technician at a large spa should be tipped, but if that same tech is a solo practitioner, then no tip should be expected. What are your thoughts on tipping?

Pregnant Women Can’t Divorce in Some States

In America, pregnancy represents a period of diminished body autonomy for women with the repeal of Roe v. Wade and the inability to divorce in some states. The law restricting divorce when pregnant, was first implemented to hold men financially accountable for their children, since in many states, the husband is liable for any child born during matrimony, biological or otherwise. This law can potentially put the mother and child in harm’s way if domestic violence is an issue in the marriage. Learn more here: Some states don’t allow pregnant women to divorce.

Shhhhhh….I hear these jobs are overemployed friendly.

In the tech industry, "overemployed" when working remotely often means that individuals are simultaneously working for multiple employers or clients in similar full-time roles. Because of the flexibility provided by remote work and less direct oversight, some tech professionals leverage their skills to work multiple jobs at once, managing their time to fulfill all responsibilities.

Reasons for this include:

Maximizing income by taking on multiple salaries or projects.

Leveraging skills in high-demand areas across different organizations.

Exploring diverse job roles or expanding their professional network.

Gaining greater job security by not relying on a single employer.

Them - The Scare

There is much Emmy buzz for Luke James and his performance in Them: The Scare. It is currently streaming on Prime and has a 100% rating score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is a horror-drama set in late 80s/ early 90s Los Angeles in which a police officer is investigating murders in Black and Brown communities. I binged all eight episodes in one day. I was hooked on the storyline and acting. Remember, it is a horror, so be cautious when watching if you are afraid of things that go ‘bump’ in the night. Also note, I did not watch season one, because I read it was hard to watch due to the racial trauma associated with it.

Randomness from my Timeline

Country singer, Tanner Adelle, shares why she wore her hair in the Bantu Knots style at this year’s Country Music Awards. Check out her music too, she is really making waves. I suggest Buckle Bunny and Whiskey Blues to start.

Bantu knots are a popular hairstyle that originated from the Bantu people of Southern Africa. They are created by sectioning the hair into small, tight coils or knots, usually close to the scalp. The knots are formed by twisting each section of hair tightly around itself until it forms a small, circular knot. Bantu knots can be worn as is for a cute and playful look, or they can be left in overnight and unraveled the next day to create a curly or wavy hairstyle known as Bantu knot-outs. This style is versatile and can be worn by people with various hair textures, though it is especially popular among those with natural, textured hair.
