July is Fibroid Awareness Month

Why is it more prevalent in Black Women?

July is Fibroid Awareness Month

Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas or myomas, are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They can vary in size, from as small as a pea to as large as a melon. Here are some key facts about fibroids, particularly in relation to African American women and Black women in other countries:

1. Prevalence: African American women are more likely to develop fibroids than women of other racial groups. Studies show that up to 80% of African American women will develop fibroids by the age of 50.

2. Symptoms: While fibroids can be asymptomatic, common symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, and constipation. Symptoms can be more severe in African American women, affecting their quality of life significantly.

3. Onset and Growth: Fibroids tend to occur at a younger age and grow more quickly in African American women compared to their white counterparts. This early onset can lead to a longer duration of symptoms throughout a woman’s life.

4. Genetic Factors: There is evidence suggesting a genetic component to fibroids. African American women are more likely to have a family history of fibroids, indicating a possible genetic predisposition.

5. Impact on Fertility and Pregnancy: Fibroids can impact fertility and pregnancy outcomes. They are linked to a higher risk of miscarriage, preterm labor, and complications during labor, which is particularly significant as African American women already face higher risks in these areas.

6. Treatment Disparities: African American women are less likely to receive minimally invasive treatments for fibroids and are more likely to undergo hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids). This disparity in treatment options can reflect broader issues of access to healthcare, healthcare bias, and differences in treatment by healthcare providers.

7. Global Perspective: While a lot of the detailed research on fibroids has been conducted in the United States, similar patterns of higher prevalence and severe symptoms have been observed among Black women in other countries, including those in the Caribbean and parts of Africa. However, data from these regions can sometimes be less comprehensive.

Word of the week

Fika

Noun: a moment to slow down and appreciate the little things in life.

Fika is a Swedish concept that makes it essential to take time to stop and socialize.

We were pretty glad we were driving slow on our way home from a camping expedition in the mountains of Santa Barbra. This little guy (maybe only a hand’s width big) was crossing a bridge that ran over a small stream. We pulled over to check him out and give him a headshot. We did learn a while back that you shouldn’t move turtles out of the road because they might get scared and pee and then become dehydrated and die… but that might just be for turtles in the desert of Joshua Tree.
