‘Change of Life’ Babies Are on the Rise
"Change of life babies" refer to children conceived naturally by women who are nearing the end of their reproductive years, typically during perimenopause. Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause when a woman's hormone levels begin fluctuating, leading to changes in the menstrual cycle. This period can last from a few months to several years, usually occurring in women in their 40s or early 50s.
Despite the common belief that fertility significantly decreases as women approach menopause, it is still possible for women to conceive during this time because ovulation, although irregular, can still occur. These pregnancies are often unexpected and can come as a surprise, hence the term "change of life babies," as they coincide with the significant life transition of moving toward menopause.
